Safeguarding and risk assessment

Of course all schools have their own safeguarding policy, with a Designated Safeguarding Lead.  This applies to these sessions.   The responsibility for safeguarding, risk assessment, duty of care and student welfare is with the teacher and school running these sessions.

This includes and is not limited to:

  • Being able to identify a child at risk
  • Providing a pathway of further support
  • All staff running these sessions to have a Disclosure and Barring certificate (or equivalent for countries outside UK)

Confident Teens Ltd has provided this training and resources to enable teachers to run confidence-boosting sessions with girls aged 9-14.  These sessions are not a substitute for counselling, therapy or any other intervention.  These sessions may not be suitable for students who are undergoing treatment or therapy for mental health problems.

Before running each session, teachers are to familiarise themselves with the content and must undertake their own risk assessment to decide if the session is appropriate for all the students who will be present.

For these sessions, the following points for safeguarding are recommended:

  • explain to the students at the start of the session workshop that what is being shared in the session is confidential, unless the facilitator has a concern about the young person’s own safety or the safety of others. In which case, this information will be shared with the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
  • if the teacher has concerns about any student following a comment they have given in the session they will discuss this with the Designated Safeguarding Lead
  • in the event that a student discloses an incident/concern of abuse the teacher will fully communicate with the Designated Safeguarding Lead, to enable the school to provide support to the individual who raises or discloses the concern

These points are intended to supplement, not replace, the school’s existing safeguarding policy.
